Last week of Summer term.

Reading and writing.

Monday

We are continuing our Transition work based around Toy Story this week.

Watch the part of the film where the toys are in danger of being melted down in the furnace. What makes this part of the film frightening? Talk about it this with someone. The toys all join hands, why do you think that they did this? How does holding hands make you feel? How many words can you think of to describe feeling when you hold hands? E.g. safe, loved, cared for, warm, comfy

Make a paper chain and write one of the words on each link that is joined together.

Tuesday

Which was your favourite part of the film? Get some of your own toys out and pretend that they are in the film too. Play with them and create your own adventure with your toys. Make sure that your toys talk to each other. You can create voices for your toys like Andy does. When you have played with your toys and they have had some adventures draw some pictures that tell the story of your own toys.

Wednesday

Yesterday you drew pictures about your toys having adventures. Talk to someone about the pictures, explaining what is happening and why. Think about where things are happening too.

Write a short story about your toys having their adventure. Please do this on paper so that you can practice your handwriting.

Thursday

Read your story out loud to an adult. Listen out for where sentences may not sound quite right. How can you improve them. Have you missed out a word or used the wrong tense. Correct your sentences and read the story again. Could you add any details to make your story more interesting? Perhaps write how a character is feeling when something is happening and/or add some description of what a character looks like.

Friday

Hopefully I will see some of you when you come in to school to collect your books today. When you get home have a good look in your books. Talk to your parents about how it felt to come back in to school. Were you nervous, happy or excited for example? Write a short diary entry to retell what it was like to pop in to school.

For those of you who are unable to come in to school to collect books today, write a short diary entry about your day.

Summer week beginning 6.07.2020

Reading and writing.

Monday

This week we are starting our transition to year 3 writing and reading tasks.

Today I would like them to write a letter to Mrs Hampson who will be their class teacher in year 3. In it they should tell her a bit of information about themselves and what they like to do. They should include some information about what they are like in school too e.g. do they have a favourite friend or is there something that they really enjoy in school. Are they quiet or chatty?

Please post the letters to Mrs Hampson at school so that they arrive by Friday the 17th of July. Then she can read them over the holidays as a way of getting to know them ready for September.

Tuesday

The whole school is using the film Toy Story 3 as a transition unit. This means that the children will do some work about it in the next 2 weeks and then will do some more work based on the film when they return in September with their new teacher. In normal times teachers would have swapped classes for some English lessons this week and next so that the children and teachers would get to know each other before September. Unfortunately this can’t happen this year but we decided to keep the cross year group work.

Watch Toy Story 3 if you can. If you do not have access to this one but can watch one of the others then that is fine too because I am going to set work that can be done using any of the films for these 2 weeks.

As you are watching the film pause it at different times and talk to your child about it. Do they know what is going on? Which characters do they like and dislike and why. This is to check their comprehension of a film. We often assume that they understand the story lines in the same way that we as adults do and sometimes this is not the case.

Wednesday

In the background of a film there is often music that gives us clues to when something is going to happen, either something good or bad. I have set Busy Beats on Purple Mash for this week and next. Let them explore this app and create some music that they think would be good in the film. It could be for a frightening part of the film or a happy one. They can choose. They will need some help to explore the different buttons and what they do but then let them go for it.

Thursday

Choose one of the characters from Toy Story. Use the paint a picture app to create their own version of this character. Ask them to describe what the character looks like to you in sentences. This should be verbally first and then written down on paper. Please check their punctuation.

Friday

Think about the pink teddy in the film. What do they think of him? We learn about what made him into an unkind character in the film. You could just watch this part of the film and talk together about how he was feeling when he felt left behind and then replaced. What did he do? How did he treat other characters unkindly. There is lots of good social skills learning around this part of the film. If you have access to Toy Story 4 then there is the part when Bopeep is found by Woody and she too had been left behind but she behaved in a very different way in this situation. Which way do they think is the better way to deal with things when they go wrong?

Write some sentences together about how they think the character was feeling in the film.

Understanding how characters feel and why they do things is part of developing as a story writer.

Summer 2 Week beginning 21st June

Reading

Monday

Today we are going to finish the book Undercover Zoo. I have been very pleased with the scores from the quizzes that you have all been doing. Well done. The quiz is set on Purple Mash in the 2do section.

Tuesday

Yesterday you finished the Purple Mash book Undercover Zoo. Today I have set a book review on Purple Mash for you to do on this book. Make sure that you remember to add some pictures and include your opinion on the book.

Wednesday

This week our topic is Safari. We are going to link our reading and writing this week to the book The Ugly 5 by Julia Donaldson. Some of you may have this book at home but if not then click on this link to watch it being read. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69K2IZ1A1ZU . Stop at the back page where the author has listed the Big 5, the Little 5 and the Shy 5. Choose one of these groups of 5 and use the internet to find a picture of them and copy and paste on to the Purple Mash writing frame set for today. You are going to be doing some writing using today.

Thursday

Today we are going to do some non-fiction reading about some of the animals that you heard about in the story The Ugly 5 yesterday. Use the website on this link https://www.softschools.com/facts/animals/. Read all about the animal that you choose and make some notes about them. You are going to use these in your writing today (see writing section).

Friday

Comprehension skills are not just for reading. Today I would like you to watch the Longleat Safari virtual visit on https://www.longleat.co.uk/news/longleat-launches-virtual-safari . Talk about the animals that you see and what you would like to do if you went to Longleat. Perhaps you have been and you remember some of what you saw on the virtual tour. You are going to use in your writing task today.

Writing

Monday

The task that we did last week that looked at different sentence types showed that we need to go back over this again. Please watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z7b3trd and do the activities set for this day.

Tuesday

Today’s writing task is to write the Book review for Undercover Zoo. This is set on Purple Mash in the 2Do’s for today.

Wednesday

You will need have completed the reading for today before you start the writing task. Once you have found out about your chosen animal (see reading for today) and you have put a picture on to the word document then you are ready to do some descriptive writing. Julia Donaldson has written a description for each of her Ugly 5. Today I would like you to write a description of your chosen animal next to the picture that you have put on the word document (see the document that I uploaded on to our school page). Try to write in a similar style to the book if you can. Use expanded noun phrases (description) to add detail. This can be done directly on to the word document and then emailed to me or it can be printed and a picture of the finished work sent to me. I would like to create a section of work on our webpage of these.

Thursday

Today there is a page set on the Purple Mash 2Do’s called My Safari Animal. Put in a picture of the animal that you chose to read about (see reading) and then write in sentences things that you found out about the animal.

Friday

After you have watched the Longleat Virtual tour and have talked about it with someone I would like you to write a diary page (Set on Purple Mash 2Do called My day at Longleat). You should pretend that you have spent the day seeing the animals. Use the prompts on the left of the page to help you to include information to make this an interesting read.

The spelling quiz for this week is set on Purple Mash in the 2Do section.

Writing

Monday to Thursday

This week we are going to revisit some of the punctuation and grammar work that we have covered this year. You will need to download the PDF below and use each day’s grammar/writing sheet.

To keep things simple we will be doing this weeks maths on this PDF too.

Friday 19th June

Spelling today. Please see Purple Mash spelling work set in the 2Dos.

Reading

Monday 8th June

Today we are reading the last chapter of The Secret of the Sandcastle. There is a quiz, sorting task, joining words work and a colouring task all set on Purple Mash 2Dos.

Tuesday 9th June

Our school topic this week is Under the Sea. Today I would like you to watch the story of The Rainbow Fish on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFORvXhub28.  You might have this story at home which you can read and look at. Please listen to how the little girl reading the story changes her voice as she reads to make it more interesting to listen to. Look at the words as she reads them and try and spot how she knows to change her voice. It could be that the font changes or punctuation marks around words or sentences. You can press pause and have a go at reading the page like she has.

I have put a simple comprehension sheet to print off and do. If you can not print then you can copy the questions onto paper or just ask them is fine too. You can down load it for the children to fill in and then email it back to me if you wish.

Wednesday 10th June

Today I have found another story about a fish under the sea. It is called The pout pout fish. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqupxANpqIE

Today you are going to make some puppet characters, they can be really simple for example putting a picture of the character on a lollipop stick or pipe cleaner.

You can have a go at retelling the story of using the puppets or pictures. Try to get the events in the correct order. Remember that you can pause the video if you need to or watch it several times.

Thursday 11th June

Today we are listening to one of the stories that I used to read a lot to my own children as they always loved rock pooling. It is called Sharing a Shell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KuSl9eXgpk

You have heard 3 different stories linked to the sea this week. Today I would like you to think about all 3 of them and what is similar and different about them. Think about what the characters learnt for example.

I have made a simple sheet for the children to record their ideas which I have uploaded in the section below. This can be downloaded or printed off. If you download it the children can type in their ideas and email them to me.

Friday 12th June

Time for some fun. You can either find a story that you have at home that has a link to the sea or you can find a story read on You tube. If you like you can watch a cartoon like Sponge Bob. I would like you to think about how the author has created characters for stories. Create your own character for a story that could be written. You can draw the character and you can write a short description about what the character is like e.g. happy, grumpy.

Writing

Monday 8th June

Over the next couple of weeks the whole school is going to be using the Disney film Inside Out as the stimulus for writing work. This film is available on lots of the different TV channels at the moment and I am sure that some of you have this at home. If you do not have access to this film then please do not feel that you must buy it. We do not want to add costs to you. I will still be setting work on for reading and other subjects and the PDF file that I have uploaded below has English work as well as so if you can not access the film Inside Out then there is plenty of work here and set on Purple Mash. Please do not try to do all of it, select a manageable amount that you would like to do.

Today please watch the film Inside Out.

Tuesday 9th June

In the film ‘Inside Out’, Riley’s memories are kept in memory orbs. Some of these memories even become ‘Core Memories’. Many of our core memories are happy memories, but sometimes these memories can hold different emotions. This week, you will be writing about some of your core memories – memories that are important to you and that you think of often. These memories will be based on the emotion characters in the film.

Today, I would like you to think of a time when you were really sad. What happened, why were you so sad? Did anybody help you to feel better? What made you feel happy again?

Write some sentences in your best handwriting about when you felt sad. Remember to use punctuation correctly.

Wednesday 10th June

In the film, there are 5 main characters based on feelings – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear. Design and draw your own Feeling Character for the film (such as jealousy, greedy, excitement, surprise, shame, etc.). Write a short description about your character to describe their look, their voice, their personality, what they act like and more.

Thursday 11th June

In the film, Riley had an imaginary friend, Bing Bong. Bing Bong was a mix of different things – an elephant, a cat, a dolphin, and even cotton candy! Bing Bong cried candy, and him and Riley used to ride around on their Rocket Wagon that was powered by song. They even had their own theme song:

Who's your friend who likes to play? Bing Bong, Bing Bong His rocket makes you yell "Hooray!" Bing Bong, Bing Bong Who's the best in every way, and wants to sing this song to say Bing Bong, Bing Bong!

Did you have an imaginary friend when you were younger? If you did, draw a picture of them and write about them. If you didn’t have an imaginary friend, think of a friend that you might like to have. Design and draw your imaginary friend. Write about what your friend would be like – what is its name, what are they made of, what do you do together, how do they dress, are they funny or good at football? Do you have something that the two of you like to play on/with? Do you have a song or a secret handshake?

If you’re feeling creative, you can even try to make your imaginary friend out of junk modelling, Play-Doh, or other creative resources.

Friday 12th June

Summer 2 spelling quiz set on Purple Mash 2Do.

Work to print off or watch for week 8th June.

Summer Term 2

Reading

Monday 1st June

Thursday 4th June

Chapter 4 of ‘The Secret of the Sandcastle’ set as a 2Do on Purple Mash. Please do the quiz and make a leaflet. We are learning about the Royal Family in school and on our Other Subjects page this week so you may like to make your leaflet about them, possibly a who’s who. Where do they live? Etc. Or you can do a leaflet about something that you like or a hobby that you have e.g. football, majorettes or Beavers. You could even add a phot of yourself.

Friday 5th June

As a Friday treat (and because lot’s of you have been enjoying Traction Man) here is the 3rd Traction Man book being read. Click on the link to listen and enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT-xHtKk7mI  (ps I am not setting any work for this book, just enjoy it.)

Writing

Monday 1st June

Please do the sentence task that is linked to today’s reading. I have also set some work called Toy Shelf on the 2Do page. This is revision really as the class have been taught about statements, questions, commands and exclamations this year already. Please follow the instructions on the app carefully. Don’t rush as there are some that could catch you out.

Tuesday 2nd June

Today I have set Ice Cream Tenses on Purple Mash. The children have been taught about past and present tense but may need a little help to understand the future tense. They have to swap the words in the sentence to change it from one tense to another.

Wednesday 3rd June

Today we are going to practice our typing skills using https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/z3c6tfr .

Thursday 4th June

Please look at the reading section for today as there is a writing task for you to do.

Friday 5th June

Spelling today. Summer 2 week 1 set on the Purple Mash 2Dos.

Reading

Monday 18/5/20

Today we are reading chapter 4 of Magic in the Moonlight on Purple Mash. The chapter, quiz and yes/no game are set on your 2Do list. There is a colouring activity too.

Tuesday 19/5/20

Today we are finishing Magic in the Moonlight on Purple Mash. The chapter, quiz and sorting task is set on the 2Do page.

Wednesday 20/5/20

Something different today. It is time to listen to the next Traction Man story. Click on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpjmDImWRMA to listen to  and see the story Traction Man meets Turbo dog. I really like this one. When you have listened to the story find an object in your house that you can turn into a pet for Traction man or you could make a shelter for your toys like he does in the story.

Thursday 21/5/20

Watch the story on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpjmDImWRMA again. You are going to write a book review for this book. A book review template is available on Purple Mash set as a 2Do for today. However, I know that some of you prefer to do things on paper and that is fine as well. I would like to see your reviews though, so please if you do it on paper, send me a photo by email so I can read it too.

Friday 21/5/20

Can you find another book by Mini Grey to listen to on Youtube? There are lots to choose from. Ask an adult to help you search. Listen to the story and look at the artwork as well. Mini Grey draws all of the pictures as well as writing the story. She is an illustrator. Can you notice any similarities in the story to the Traction Man stories. There is another Traction Man story, I wonder if you can find it.

Writing

This weeks task.

Last week I asked you to play on the 2Animate app that I set on PurpleMash and lots of you have.

A few things to try today.

If you click on the picture of a mountain at the top you will find backgrounds to choose from.

If you click on the speaker you will get some sound options. Double click on the picture and that sound will be added to the slide that you are working on. If you want to make your own music click on the word piano and you can record your own sound.

You also have the option to record your own voice so you could tell the story for each frame, just like how the story of Traction man is read on each page on You tube (you could take a peak at the next Traction Man story that I have set for Wednesday’s reading task).

This weeks writing task is to create a short film that tells a story about a hero. It can be any hero either a real one or a made up one. You might want to use Traction Man or a character from a film. You can make up your own character. You have all week to create this so I do want to see more than one slide of film. The slides are at the top and you can add more to create your story. I am looking forward to having a movie night at the weekend and watching all of your films. Have fun.

Friday 22.5.20

This weeks spelling quiz is set on Purple Mash 2Do.

Writing

Monday 11/5/20

Last week you were finding out about VE Day and you were asked to be like a reporter and make notes about how VE Day was celebrated and why. Today and tomorrow, I would like you to create your own newspaper page all about VE Day. Do this on paper at home and handwrite it please. Take your time with this and make sure that you include, why we celebrated, how we celebrated, important dates e.g. the year that the war ended. You could also add how this years celebrations were different because of Covid. I am not setting any written tasks for tomorrow so that you can spend some time making this really good.

Don’t forget to add in some pictures.

Ask someone to take a photo of it and email it to me when you have finished. I will post good ones on our class page.

Wednesday 13.5.20

Today I have set a task on Purple Mash to think about how we join 2 sentences or ideas together in a sentence using conjunctions, e.g. because, or, and, so etc. This is set in the 2Do section. The task is called Rainy Day.

I have also set an animation app called 2 Animate on Purple Mash. This week I would like you to play on this app and try out all the different buttons and functions and what they do. I do not want a piece of work on this this week, simply explore the app. You will be able to create your own mini films using this. Try changing the backgrounds and characters. Have fun with it.

Thursday 14.5.20

Today I have set a task on Purple Mash to practice improving sentences by using expanded noun phrases, e.g. The hot, sizzling sausage. This is set on Purple Mash 2Dos and is called Making phrases interesting.

Friday 15.5.20

Today you have spelling quiz 4 set on the 2Do section of Purple Mash. Don’t forget you can also try out, 2Animate and or go on the bbc dance mat for typing which some of you started earlier this half term. It is a fun way to improve your typing skills. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/z3c6tfr

Summer Week 3

Monday 4.5.20

This week we celebrate VE day and I think that it is important that children learn a little about what this means and what life was like for children during WW2. Therefore this weeks book is called Buster’s Blitz. Today please read Chapter 1 with your child and do the quiz.

I have also put a Power Point link on the page today for you to look at with your child. This has been to help children to understand a little about WW2 and why VE Day is celebrated. The children will learn more about WW2 as they get older and so they do not need to go into lots of detail (which may not be age appropriate). Watch out for things on TV as I am sure there will be things about VE day there.

I have also put lots of things on the Other Subjects page for the children to do this week, all linking with VE Day.

Tuesday 5.5.20

Chapter 2 Buster’s Blitz and quiz.

Wednesday 6.5.20

Chapter 3 Buster’s Blitz and quiz.

Thursday 7.5.20

Chapter 4 Buster’s Blitz and quiz.

Friday 8.5.20 (This is a bank holiday so this could be done on Monday next week if you wish.)

Chapter 5 Buster’s Blitz and quiz.

Monday 11.5.20

Chapter 6 Buster’s Blitz and quiz.

Tuesday 12.5.20

Chapter 7 Buster’s Blitz and quiz.

Writing

Monday 4.5.20

This is a word search linked to VEday. If you can print it off have a go.

https://content.twinkl.co.uk/resource/81/bc/t2-h-4718-ve-day-wordsearch-_ver_1.pdf?__token__=exp=1588268959~acl=%2Fresource%2F81%2Fbc%2Ft2-h-4718-ve-day-wordsearch-_ver_1.pdf%2A~hmac=66af659bbc3d510bbdee522c0ba9b11d20c8a68a975f79acc59783cba5042ab5

Tuesday 5.5.20 onwards Newspaper article to be done on Monday 11th of May

This week you are going to be journalists who are going to write about VE Day and any events that happen on Friday. This should include things that they find out have had to be cancelled or done in a different way, e.g. street parties.  Find out as much as you can about VE Day too so that the children can put why VE day is important in their final article. You can google for information and keep an eye out on the news too as there will be things about the VE day celebrations that have had to be changed because of the Pandemic. The Queen will be speaking to the Nation at 21:00 hours on Friday too at the same time that Winston Churchill addressed the Nation.

Keep notes through the week about what you see and find out.

BBC Newsround will have things suitable for the children to look at and I have put some power point links about the history of the day here too.

Next week I will be putting a newspaper page template on to Purple mash for the children to write about this years VE Day celebrations. I won’t put it up before because some children may fill it in before the event has happened and will be asked to redo it on the Monday.

If you would like to do more written work with your child then look on  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize where there are daily English activities to help improve their writing. Please note that these are not linked to our topic but this does not matter. They are skills that are great for your child to learn. I have no access to what will be taught on here from week to week.

Thursday 7.5.20

Spelling words set as quiz on Purple Mash 2Do.

Summer Term Week 2

Reading

Monday 27.4.29

We are starting a new chapter book on Purple Mash today called Red to the Rescue. We will be reading Chapter 1 (set on the 2Do page) and doing the work that I have set on there for today that links with this chapter. Please make sure that you do the quiz for every chapter this week. It can be helpful to look at the quiz questions first before reading the chapter so that the children know what they are going to be asked. It is tricky for them to be able to go back and look for the answers while in the middle of the quiz. The book links with our topic.

I know that this will be tricky for some children to read independently. Those who are reading chapter books in school should be able to manage the chapter themselves although there may be some words that they need help with. Children who are not reading the chapter books in school should still do this work with support please. Help your child to read the page and in a few cases read the page to them.

Tuesday 28.4.20

Chapter 2 of Red to the Rescue and the work set linked to this on Purple Mash. Please make sure that the quiz is done. (See yesterday’s advice).

Wednesday 29.4.20

Chapter 3 of Red to the Rescue and the work set linked to this on Purple Mash. Please make sure that the quiz is done.

Thursday 30.4.20

Chapter 4 of Red to the Rescue and the work set linked to this on Purple Mash. Please make sure that the quiz is done.

Friday 1.5.20

Chapter 5 Red to the Rescue and the work set linked to this on Purple Mash. Please make sure that the quiz is done.

Writing

Monday 27.4.20

We are carrying on with our Superhero topic this week and our writing work is linked to it too. I have set a 2Do for this week to write a Superhero story but it is best not to rush. This is meant to take more than one session and I will not be expecting to see finished stories until Thursday evening.

Today spend some time talking about superheroes and what they do with your child. Ask them questions that get them thinking e.g. who, where, why and when. Get them to think about how they would describe their superhero too. Don’t rush straight in to writing anything. Talking about their ideas first makes it easier for them to write later. It may be helpful for you to jot down their ideas to help them remember tomorrow.

Tuesday 28.4.20

Revisit yesterday’s ideas about their story. Ask them to draw pictures that show what is happening in their story in the sequence that they are going to happen in. They can do this independently on paper. When they have finished ask them questions about what they have drawn. Again refer to who, where, why and when. Get them to verbally tell you their story.

Wednesday 29.4.20

Using the pictures that they drew yesterday ask them to retell you the story. Help them to speak sentences that make sense and correct any grammatical errors. This helps them to write the sentences accurately. The children can then write their first go on the 2Do page set for this weeks writing called Superhero story.

Thursday  30.4.20

Read the children’s story with them. Encourage them to check that their sentences make sense and that they have punctuated them correctly. Some children are not using capital letters or punctuation in their work online. This may be because they are not sure how to do them using a keyboard so please show them how to do this if they do not know. By the end of this session the story should be finished with 3 pictures at the top.

I am looking forward to reading them all.

Friday 1.5.20

Please give the children a spelling test using the words on the quiz set last week. This week we have new words set on the 2Do Purple Mash. The children can learn the words using the PDFs here. If you can not print these off  you can do the work on paper. https://static.purplemash.com/mashcontent/applications/guides/Spelling_Y1_Sum1_Wk2_Dictation/Year%201%20Summer%201%20Week%202%20Dictations.pdf

Summer Term

Week 1

Reading

Monday 20.4.20

This term our topic is Superheros. The world is certainly full of them at the moment but we are going to start by looking at the book I would have been reading to the class this week to start us off. Some of you may have the book at home but don’t worry if you haven’t, click on the link below and watch and listen to the story ‘Traction Man is Here’ by Mini Grey. It is a good idea to listen to the whole story first and then listen again. Pause the story so that you can talk about it at different points. Really look at the artwork that she has drawn, all of the everyday items in the pictures are characters and are part of the story.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FfW3X1V4J0

If you can print then look at the link below to print off some activities to do with Traction Man. If you can not print, don’t worry. Have a go at drawing your own Traction Man and design an outfit or 2 for him to wear on an adventure.

https://www.minigrey-blog.com/things-to-make-and-do/traction-man-is-here-resources/

Tuesday 21.4.20

Who is Mini Grey?

Today you are going to find out about the author Mini Grey who wrote Traction Man. Ask an adult to help you to search for information about her online.

Find out 5 facts about her e.g. Why is she called Mini? What jobs has she had?

Find out the titles of some of her other books.

Go onto Purple Mash 2Do and there is the template ‘My Character is’. Use this template to write about Mini Grey. You could cut and paste a picture of her or a book cover to put into the picture part. I will be able to see these when you save them.

Wednesday 22.4.20

Today is World Earth Day and we can all be Superheros and do things to help save the planet.

Google Earth day poems and click on the images link. This give you lots and lots of short and catchy poems to read about how we can help the planet. Adults you may wish to choose one or 2 to print off or read together first or you may do this with your child, this is up to you.

Ask some questions about the poems. What is the message? What do they have in common? Do any of them rhyme? Ask the children if they can remember a poem that we all learnt earlier in the school year called ‘Glitter Quitter’.

Thursday 23.4.20

Today is St. Georges Day.

Click on this link https://www.storynory.com/st-george-and-the-dragon/ and press play to listen to information about St. George and then the story. There is lots of information about him on the page too.

(See Other subjects for some things that the children can do linked to St. George)

Friday 24.4.20

Listen to the story of Traction Man on utube again. (See Monday for the link).

Draw pictures that show some of the different things that Traction Man does in the story. Remember to draw some of the things that the story tells you e.g. the pillows or the spoons.

Writing

Monday 20.4.20

This term our topic is Superheroes and lots of us know some! We have all visited The Knoll Nursing Home this year and so all of the children have met and seen people who are working very hard to look after their elderly patients. I have been in contact with the home’s manager and she has said that they would be delighted to receive cards, letters and pictures from the children to support the staff and residents there. They are not NHS workers so please explain to the children why this would not go on what they write or draw.

Today’s work is to write a letter, poem, card, email message, or simply to draw a picture with a message for the staff at The Knoll. You can send them directly to the home or email photos or messages to me which I will forward to the manager of the home. She has said that she will display the children’s work for all to see in the home.

The address if you would be able to send the work directly is

Morning everyone.

Today I have set Chapter 2 of the book we started yesterday. There is also a quiz and other activities to do after you have read the chapter. Don't forget you can ask someone to help you read or read it all for you.

Have a good day everyone.

Mrs Foote

2.4.20

Good morning everyone.

Today we are starting something a little different. On Purple Mash I have set chapter on of a story called 'Anne and the Third Leaf' that you can read  on the 2Do page . You will need to read the story first and it is okay to have someone help you to read it or even read it for you. Then there is a quiz and other activities set on the 2Do page which you can complete after reading the story. You will have to read the story first or the other activities will not make sense. Over the next few days I will set the rest of the story, a chapter at a time with activities for them too.

I hope that you enjoy the story.

Mrs Foote

1.4.20

Good morning everyone.

Thank you for the jokes that got sent in yesterday, they really made me giggle.

I have set a reading 2Do today on Purple Mash. Please fill in all of the boxes on the page. Look carefully at the top of each box because it tells you what information to put in. You can choose to use the book you are reading now or a favourite book that you have read before. Don't forget to add a picture too.

If you are not sure what book to use have a look at the site link for the Owl Reading ebooks. There are lots to choose from.  https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/

I look forward to reading your work.

31.3.20

Good morning everyone. Today we are going to have some fun. The children in school are having a go at writing jokes today and I thought it would be fun for you to join in. Find some jokes or have a go at making some up of your own. Tell them to other people and see if you can make them laugh. Choose your favourite joke and email it to me if you can so that I can tell them to the children in school. We will post some of them on our website later this week.

Keep working at your typing skills that I set yesterday too. This is a very handy skill to have.

Don't forget to send me your joke.

Mrs Foote

30.3.20

Good morning everyone.

As we are all using computers and ipads more than ever before I think that it would be a good time to learn and practice typing skills. I have set some typing 2do;s on Purple Mash and the link for BBC dance mat for typing is a good fun way of learning to type.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf2f9j6/articles/z3c6tfr

I have also put on a spelling activity focusing on using the possessive apostrophe. This is something new that we have not learnt in school yet so it will need a bit of explaining.  Watch the link https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zx9ydxs too to help explain this use of punctuation.

The typing will take time to learn and practice so it is going to be an ongoing home project over the next few weeks.

Have fun everyone.

Mrs Foote

27.3.20

Good Morning everyone.

It's Friday so I thought I would share with you one of my favourite short films today. Please click on this link https://www.literacyshed.com/for-the-birds.html. If you click on the big picture of the bird on the wire it will open the film for you to watch.

Please watch this with someone else and then talk about the film and what happens. Think about what you think the message of the film is. How are all the birds behaving? What makes the film funny? What happens in the film? This is a good chance to do some verbal comprehension work to see what the children are understanding when they watch a story. I have watched it lots of times and still enjoy it.

There is no writing today, this is a talking task.

Good morning everyone.

I really enjoyed reading your stories yesterday everyone.

Today I have put some Grammar activities on Purple Mash in the 2Do section. You can also look at the other things from this week.

Please do some reading today and you could draw a picture to go with your book.

You are all doing really well.

Keep safe.

25.3.20

Good morning Year 2.

I have been looking for some phonics games for those of you who are reading the red sticker books. Unfortunately lots of them want you to subscribe although you can have trials for some of them for free. Mums and dads you really shouldn't pay. Here is a game that I found which looks fun. https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/alien-escape?phase=3   https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/flash-cards?phase=3

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/phonics-frog?phase=3

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/alien-escape?phase=4

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/odd-and-bob?phase=4

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/sentence-substitution?phase=4

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/word-pairs?phase=4

These are not all for today but can be dipped in and out of over time. They should be revisited as this reinforces learning.

Those of you who are reading chapter books here are some spelling games for you too.

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/suffix-factory-set-1?phase=6

https://www.phonicsbloom.com/uk/game/suffix-factory-set-2?phase=6

For everyone this is a great site to get ebooks for free. https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/  . Parents you will need to put your details in to access this so it is very much your decision if you use it. There are lots of books of all reading levels and the books have activity games that the children can play as they read.  Today's work is to explore this and then it can be used whenever you like to help engage your children in reading. (Sometimes seeing a book in a different way gets them wanting to read).

Lots here today but it is all for you to dip in and out of over time. Please do not try to do all of this at once.

from Mrs Foote

24.3.20

Good morning everyone.

Today I have set 2Create a Story on Purple Mash in the 2Do section. You can draw pictures and write a story. This should be at least 4 pages long please, use the arrows at the bottom to turn to a new page. You can write any story you like but here are some ideas if you are a bit stuck.

The Ice castle,

Into the woods.

Superman to the rescue

The runaway lorry.

The lost princess.

Have fun and I look forward to reading these.

Mrs Foote

23.3.20

Good morning everyone.

I set the task A. last week. Well done Solstice your's was fantastic. I will keep this activity here as there are lots of you who have not done this one yet. Task B is your work for today.

A. I have set some another 2Do on Purplemash this morning. You are to design your own game and write instructions on how to play it. You can then teach your game to your family and play it. Take a picture of it because there may be a way of sharing our work with each other (watch this space, Mr Langdon is busy trying to make this possible).

B. On your 2Do section there is a grammar task to complete called About a Wolf. You need to read the story and drag the correct suffix to the end of the word with a line at the end. We have been learning about suffixes but there are a few new ones to use too.

Don't forget to read today please.

Have fun everyone.
