Maths

Hello,

I will be setting out Maths work here.  Please note that any work set on Purple Mash will be further explained on that site.  The list below is to direct you and give the titles of the tasks you need to do.  There are also all of the Club 99 times table tests below for your children to practise.  For this test, we give them 10 minutes in school to complete.  If you have any further questions, please email.

Thank you!

We are going to have some extra practise with Scaling today, but with fruit!  This isn't from White Rose, but you can use your learning from yesterday to have a go at these problems.  Good luck!

14.05.20

The helpful videos can still be found on the White Rose website.  Today's focus is:

Summer Term Week 4, Lesson 4 -  Scaling

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

There is also good information on the BBC Bitesize link:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/tags/zmyxxyc/year-3-and-p4-lessons/1

Just a heads up to parents that Scaling can sometimes be difficult for children to understand.  We have learned about this previously, but if your child is struggling, don't put too much pressure on them or yourselves.  Remember that scaling mostly involves the times table facts!

Today, we are going to take a short break from the White Rose website.  I would instead like you to solve the money word problems that are attached below.

White Rose Maths is now working with BBC Bitesize.  Unfortunately, BBC Bitesize does not load their learning activities until the morning, so I am not able to see what they are uploading.  You may or may not find this helpful for completing today's activity, but here is the link:

Purple Mash:

Time - 5 minutes to

Time - 5 minutes past

We will continue with White Rose Maths next week.  Because many of you continued to do home learning over the Easter break, we got a little bit ahead!  The White Rose website says that they are coordinating their plans with BBC Bitesize from now on.  I don't know what that entails yet, but hopefully it will be helpful for you at home!  Have a nice weekend!

Please go to this website, and have a go at Summer Term Week 2, Lesson 4 - Problem Solving

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

Mathletics:

Over the past couple of weeks, I have assigned all of the Fractions activities on Mathletics.  Most of you haven't completed all of them yet, so I may stop assigning until our next Maths topic.  It would be very good if some of you could catch up on some of the activities!

24.04.20

Please go to this website, and have a go at Summer Term Week 2, Friday Maths Challenge

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-3/

The questions that are made for Year 3 are questions 1-4.  Please do not attempt any further questions, as they get increasingly more difficult!  If they are too difficult for your child, log in to Mathletics and have a go at some of the assigned tasks there.

***Apparently as of 9:20 this morning, the maths challenge for this week has not been posted on the White Rose website!  It seems that they are having a bit of a lie in!  If the challenge has not been posted when you are doing your home learning, then you can have a go at last week's math challenge, or spend some time on Mathletics.  Sorry for the inconvenience!  Have a good weekend everyone!

Note: This will be the first experience that the children will have with decimals.  If they struggle with this work, don't worry too much or pressure them.  This is more of a Year 4 learning objective, but it is a good introduction to decimals.

Also, please let me know how you're getting on with the White Rose Maths Activities.  I haven't heard much negative feedback about it yet, but if you or your child are finding it difficult, please send me an email.  However, if everybody is happy with it, I will continue on giving this as home learning.

The White Rose Maths website is offering free home learning activities.  Each 'lesson' has a teaching video to watch, activity sheets and an answer key.  As we would normally be learning about fractions at this point in school, doing these activities will help the children stay as caught up as possible during this time.  The only problem is that the activity sheets are only available as PDF.  I want to limit the amount of printing that you are having to do at home, especially as I know that some of you don't have access to a printer.  Therefore, the children can just write the answers on a piece of paper (much as they would do in school).

I'm going to give this a try this week, but please give me feedback on how things are going.  The whole idea is to make the work as independent as possible for children (as we know that parents have a lot of other responsibilities).  If things are generally going smoothly, I may continue this for the time that we are out of school.  However, if it is more trouble than it's worth, please let me know, and I will just continue using Mathletics and Purple Mash activities.

For today's maths learning, I have set work on Purple Mash.  There are 2 Maths activities, both relating to interpreting block and picture graphs, which is a unit we completed before the school closures.

Extra Home Learning Tasks:

If you are looking for more maths to do, there are links to Mathletics and Hit the Button on the Year 3 web page.  Keep practising your times tables facts as well!

Parents:  As we do not know when we will be returning to school, I would suggest teaching your children how to tell time.  It is a very important life skill to have, and it is a very tricky concept for children to understand.  Practice at home throughout the day would be very beneficial to your child.
