Create your own African art, using one of the designs and instructions below.  If you don't have some of the materials, see what you might be able to dig out of your recycling.  For example, if you don't have a paper plate, you can use a cereal box.  If you don't have a terracotta pot, you can use a pasta sauce jar, etc.

As always, please send photos.  I love to see what you are creating!

Dragons were a very important part of Chinese culture.  Use the templates to create your own Chinese dragon.  Or if you are feeling creative, you can make your own dragon using junk modelling.

There are instructions and templates below to help you.  You can print and use these if you wish, but you can also design your own.

VE Day Veteran – Research a VE Day Veteran and write a fact file about him/her using the document below.  A WWII veteran that has made the news recently is Captain Tom Moore, who has raised millions of pounds for the NHS during the Coronavirus Pandemic.  He would be a great veteran to research.

Also, please take note of the optional online STEM learning below.

Lastly, with the focus being on VE day this week, I have forgot to mention that there is home learning on the Music and Spanish pages.  Please take a look at those activities when you have a chance!

https://www.stgildasprimary.co.uk/year-3-2/

Just a heads up for Thursday - I have received an email from Mrs Frost saying that there are special STEM home learning activities throughout the day.  I've looked at the schedule, and some of them look like a lot of fun!   It may just be easiest for me to copy and paste the email with all of the details:

This Thursday STEM Ambassadors will be presenting a day of live streamed activities for schools and students at home.

https://www.stem.org.uk/news-and-views/news/stem-ambassadors-live

The day will include a series of half hour sessions from STEM Ambassadors covering a range of subjects across science, engineering, mathematicians and more. A Question and Answer forum will also run alongside each session, allowing students to engage their curiosity and dig further into the subject. Each presenter will bring a wealth of expertise from their work as a STEM professional, using activities already tried and tested in the classroom.

The event starts at 10am and will be live-streamed on the STEM Learning YouTube channel. The sessions will cover a range of ages, but will mostly be focused on older primary school and younger secondary school students. The videos can be watched after as well.

Morse Code was used in WWII to send secret messages.  Can you crack these codes on the Morse Code worksheet?  (Parents - if you scroll past the answers, there is the morse code alphabet to refer to!)

Rationing - Watch the BBC video on rationing

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-rationing-in-the-uk/zbgby9q

Then, I have 2 choices of activity for you and your family.

1)  Complete the Ration Book Shopping List Activity that is attached below (this requires some extra maths learning)

2)  Try to make one of the wartime recipes that I've attached.  It seems very fitting at this time that some of the recipes are 'eggless', as it is difficult to find eggs at the moment.  I might even try out the Eggless Chocolate Cake!  I understand that some families may choose this option, but may not have the ingredients, so if it takes you a few days to complete, that's fine!  However, I would like to see your mouthwatering creations - please send pictures!

Also, look below to see some photos of Spitfire planes and creative dinosaurs from last week.  Well done everyone!

Hola amigos😊

I will be using my own class MFL page to set  work each week from now on. Please go to https://www.stgildasprimary.co.uk/year-3-1/ to find the work I have set for you.  Any questions please email me.

Hasta la vista, Sra Blackledge

The few children who will be attending school this week are learning about dinosaurs.  Since the Year 3 children learned about fossils in our Rocks science unit, I thought it might be fun if they got to take part in some of these activities.

First of all, please go to the following website and take a virtual tour of the Natural History Museum in London.  Some of the rooms have a lot of cool fossils and other artefacts in them!

https://artsandculture.google.com/streetview/the-natural-history-museum-hintze-hall/yQHjHCmSOMKyhQ?sv_lng=-0.1761982027757261&sv_lat=51.49619948368937&sv_h=18.560631056347614&sv_p=10.527229077479603&sv_pid=k9TibM-zaIgPPqBhoS1bUw&sv_z=0.1465652824382243

Then, have a go at drawing a T-Rex following the instructions on this website:

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-draw-a-dinosaur.html

Please email me your T-Rex pictures!  I will post them on the class website.

RE - Ramadan

Last Thursday, the 24th April, Muslim people from around the world began to celebrate a very special time in their religion.  While I know we are a Catholic school, it is also very important to learn about other faiths and live in harmony with them within our school and global community.

For today's home learning, I want you to find 5 interesting facts about Ramadan and post them on the Reading Cloud.  The website below has great videos and information to help you.  I look forward to seeing what you have found out!

Science and History - Light and the Egyptians

I have attached a PowerPoint and an activity below that is all about reflecting light.  The children should have some knowledge about this, but when we did a similar activity in class, it became very difficult to monitor 32 children doing their investigations.  Some children were able to investigate and deepen their understanding a little better than others!

Earth Day!!!

As it is World Earth Day today, I'm going to get you outside to enjoy the sunshine and to do a scavenger hunt!  Below is a list of items that you might find in your front or back gardens.  I would like you to collect as many of them as you can, and if you find anything else that isn't on the list, you can collect those as well!

Once you've found and collected as much as you can, I'd like you to create either a fairy/earth garden or a piece of art that celebrates our earth.  Use the items that you have collected in your artwork.  Please send pictures of your creations and I'll add them to the website.  I'm looking forward to seeing what you create!

(If you do not have easy access to an outdoor space at home or nearby, please stay at home.  Your children can make a poster to celebrate the world and draw some of the items from the scavenger hunt in their artwork)

21.04.20

Music from Mrs Bowsher

Hope you all had a fun Easter!  We are going to be looking at the theme of the human body over the next few weeks. Listen to the link of the Joyful skeleton:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8YkDnW2e3k

Do you know what instrument he is playing? Is it smooth and flowing or jagged and jumpy? How does it make you feel? Can you make up your own joyful skeleton music?

Dry bones connected song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKAg2oIEu9w

Try singing this and dancing along with the skeleton at the end!

Purple Mash

RE - St George

On the 23rd April, it is St George's Day.  I would like you to research St George and make a profile of him on Purple Mash.  See if you can find out:

- his name (other than St George)

- what century he lived in

- what country he is a patron saint of

- what did he do in his life that made him so well-known / what is he remembered for

- how do people celebrate his life

- what is his main emblem / what other symbols are used to remember him

I've also added an optional paint project on Purple Mash for those who want to 'paint' the dragon and the knight.

17.04.20

Purple Mash

RE - Honesty

Watch the video on Purple Mash and write a text about why telling the truth is so important.

16.04.20

Queen Elizabeth II gave an important speech on Sunday, 5th April.  Besides her yearly Christmas Day messages and her speeches at the beginning of every Parliamentary year, she has only delivered 5 messages to the nation in her 68 years as Queen.

Can you find out when she delivered those 5 speeches and why those speeches are important?  Use this website to help you:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52166242

Record your answers on the Reading Cloud.

Extension:  If you saw the Queen's speech, what did you think of it?  Share your thoughts.
