PE
At St Gildas, PE is inclusive and accessible for all children. The intent of teaching physical education is to allow children to experience a range of activities and providing them with skills and knowledge, whilst having fun and developing their health, fitness and wellbeing.
We want all children to develop fundamental movement skills, tactics, expression of movement and appraisal skills in a nurturing yet engaging environment to inspire them to continue with physical activity for life. Children develop a range of personal, social, physical, cognitive and creative skills which can be used when making choices in their every day life.
We want all children at St Gildas to develop their physical and emotional health through working as a team as well as independently by building their resilience through personal achievement, solving problems and taking on leadership roles. Opportunities to compete in sport will aim to build character and embed values such as fairness and respect.
The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
are physically active for sustained periods of time
engage in competitive sports and activities
lead healthy, active lives
Implementation
Children will have PE lessons twice a week led by teaching staff and TLE Sports Coaching Company, providing CPD for teaching assistants and teachers. We are committed to providing high quality PE lessons mapped out using our progression plans as well as Real PE. We use local facilities including Mudford Recreation Park and Goldenstones Leisure Centre on a regular basis.
Swimming is taught in Key Stage 2, to achieve the required statutory objectives, particularly swimming the required distance of 25m. We also offer a residential to cover some of the outdoor education required in the curriculum at a local outdoor education activity centre.
The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in the area along with after school clubs and inter-house competitions and sports days.
As a Gold Kitemark award school, we offer the chance for our Year 6 pupils to be sports leaders and assist with warm ups, cool downs and setting up sporting events across the year. They also may take some lunchtime clubs for younger pupils.
We also compete in cross country, indoor athletics, football, tag rugby, basketball and netball matches against other schools on a regular basis and take part in the Yeovil inter-school Area Sports and Swimming Gala. Cricket and rounders are played in the Summer term. The sports committee produce sports reports for the school: Cross Country, Hockey, High Fives when they have attended an event.
The impact of our curriculum will mean that by the time children finish in year 6, they will have:
- A healthy lifestyle.
- Increased and maintained levels of physical activity and fitness.
- Gained knowledge and skills to take forwards with them into sports and physical activity outside of school.
- Increased confidence in planning warm ups and cools downs, officiating events and evaluating their preparation and planning as sports leaders to improve next time.
- Good levels of creativity in choreography and tactics.
- The ability to work independently and as a team effectively.
- The ability to swim 25m and know how to stay safe in and around the water.
