Modern Foreign Language

MFL is taught to all Key Stage 2 children in St Gildas.  We choose to teach Spanish and to introduce French during Year 6.

You do not have to do any of the Spanish activities or homework that I upload as we do not 'officially' have Spanish homework. However, if you would like to consolidate vocabulary or re visit a favourite song or story that we have been learning in class, then please check here and also on your class page. ¡Gracias! smiley

Spanish warm-ups!

  • Spanish Body Percussion warm up Learn some Spanish body percussion and names of simple food. Do you recognize the name of the Composer? A great way to warm up to Spanish. The Spanish is fast, so just follow the Spanish music teacher and the pictures. It is quite fun once you get going! :)

Kikiriki - Miss Rosi

This is a fun song to sing along to. Great for practising your Rrrrs ou know that 'kikiriki' or quiquiriki is the sound a cockerel makes in Spanish! What do they say in English.....? Cock a doodle doo!

Spanish sounds/sonidos españoles 

 

 

  • The Spanish sounds: CI CE Ce Ci 'the' and 'thi' in Spanish from Spain. Put your tongue behind your front teeth! In Latin America and the West of Spain the sound is soft and makes a 'snakey' sound - 'se' and 'si. This clip is using the Latin American pronunciation. It is easier if you have lost your two front teeth See how many new Spanish words you can learn with Ce and Ci. Why not draw a picture and show me in class.
  • Spanish sound: Rr Practise rolling your Spanish 'Rrs' with 123 Andres rrrrrrrrrrrrrr
  • Spanish sound (digraph): ch This is a digraph (un dígrafo). What is a digraph? A digraph is made up of two letters that combine together to make one sound (phoneme). We have many in English and we also have some in Spanish. You need to remember these sounds.
  • Spanish sound (digraph): ll Learn how to pronounce the 'll' in Spanish. It makes a 'y' sound in English. It is used a lot in Spanish so is a useful phonic sound to learn. How many words can you find that use 'll'?

Spanish General Stories

  • A colour of his own by Leo Lionni English version: this is an American English version. Can you spot the differences in American and English spellings? eg color (American) and colour (English)
  • Su proprio color por Leo Lionni Now listen to the story in Spanish :) You don't need to understand all the words to follow it, especially if you have listened to the English version. Which do you prefer? Why?
  • Biblioburro a True Story from Colombia by Jeanette Winter Once upon a time, Luis Soriano, with his two burros, Alpha and Beto, set off in search of children who wanted to read...but didn’t have any books. / Había una vez Luis Soriano, con sus dos burros Alfa y Beto, se fue en busca de unos niños que querían leer... pero no tenían libros
  • Frida Kahlo A story about the life of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo
  • El pajaro y la ballena (the bird and the whale) You can switch on the subtitles in English (or another language) to help you understand this story. How many new words can you remember in Spanish? What difficult decision to the two friends have to make?
  • Story: Gorgoé el árbol mágico de los océanos. Gorgoe the magical tree of the Oceans. This is a story about a village by the sea (somewhere in Latin America!) It has very little fresh water. One day the prince and his sister are exploring and go through a tunnel. They discover a beautiful tree, surrounded by flowers. Animals are drinking from the water. To their amazement, the water is fresh. The tree speaks to them and says it changes the salty water to fresh water by dropping leaves into the sea at night. The leaves collect the salt and change into the flowers. The villagers don't believe the children at first but then soon discover their story is true. The fresh water saves their village. Then along comes an evil king and tries to take the tree away from them...You'll have to listen and watch the story to find out what happens! What do you think the message of this story is?

Spanish cartoon clips

  • Las aventuras del oso Paddington Can you work out which favourite bear this is about? 22 minutes long. Remember for English subtitles (and other languages) you can click on the cog wheel. Click on Spanish auto translate. Then click translate and the scroll down to the language you would like the subtitles to be in.

Concierto de Aranjuez - Pablo Sáinz Villegas

This is a beautiful piece of Classical Spanish guitar music composed by Joaquín Rodrigo and played here by Pablo Villegas.It is said it was inspired by his honeymoon to his wife Victoria in Aranjuez. Rodrigo described the concerto itself as capturing "the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains" in the gardens of Aranjuez. 26 minutes long. Enjoy/Disfrute

  • Chopin, Nocturnes We'll be listening to this while working during French. I know Chopin was Polish but he also lived in Paris from 21:) Beautiful and relaxing music.

  • Animals of South America In year 5 we 'visit' South America where Spanish (Castillian and Portuguese) are spoken as well as the hundreds of dialects from all around South America. Here are some of the animals we will meet. Do you know the names of some of them? Can you find out some information about their habitats?
